During the referendum on affordable housing and municipal public real estate, the majority answered ‘YES’ to the two questions.
Today, 12.4 percent of all eligible Ghent residents cast a vote during the referendum on affordable housing and municipal public real estate. For 79.38 percent of the valid votes (or 11.66 percent of all eligible voters) ‘YES’ was indicated on the first question, for 77.35 percent (or 11.36 percent of all eligible voters) ‘YES’ was indicated on the second ask.
According to the rules of the Flemish government, a referendum in cities and municipalities with more than 30,000 inhabitants is only valid if 10 percent of all eligible residents cast a vote. That threshold was met: a total of 33,203 Ghent residents, or 12.40 percent of all voters, came to cast their votes. 32,622 votes were valid, or 98.25 percent.
To the first question, ‘Municipal public real estate may not be privatized. Do you agree?’ 25,894 Ghent residents (79.38 percent of the valid votes or 11.66 percent of those entitled to vote) indicated the answer ‘YES’. To the second question, ‘Should the City of Ghent establish a bank of public lands to achieve 40 percent social housing?’ 25,233 Ghent residents (77.35 percent of the valid votes or 11.36 percent of those entitled to vote) answered ‘YES’.
