Utrecht bookcases (28) | News030

Every Sunday – until supplies last – Nieuws030 publishes a photo of a beautiful or special public Utrecht bookcase.

The stray book site tells me that there is a bookcase at Rembrandtkade 10. So no! A woman walking there remembers that on the Stadhouderslaan it is a cupboard. She points me in the right direction, but I only see the mini library when I stop in front of the building: Stadhouderslaan 112. The sticker text on the mini library ‘Discover books around the corner’ is literally correct in this case: I had to go around the corner.

An artistic sign has been hung above the yellow cupboard with the text ‘Jopbo’ or ‘Sjopbo’.

Most of the books are on the top shelf. I see three German books and an English travel guide ‘Hwange Elephant Country: Zimbabwe (Into Africa travel guide).’

Furthermore, there are mainly Dutch or Dutch-translated books. The thickest book is the collection with Agatha Christie stories, such as ‘An exotic remedy’, ‘In the name of love’, ‘The goddess of revenge’ and ‘The Regatta mystery’. You have to be looking forward to ‘The IK’ by writer Lodewijk van Deyssel from 1978. These are his posthumously published ‘heroic-individualistic diary pages’. Van Deyssel is the pseudonym of Karel Joan Lodewijk Alberdingk Thijm. He died in 1952. One of his best-known works is ‘Een Liefde’ from 1886.

Much more recent is the Book Week Gift 2021 by Hanna Bervoets: ‘What we saw’. It is about Kayleigh’s hard work as a ‘content moderator’ for an online platform. She must judge which offensive videos, photos and rants should be removed.

The science fiction novel ‘The Moon in Rebellion’ by the American writer Robert Heinlein was published in 1966 and was not published in Dutch until 1971. According to Wikipedia, the fictional story takes place on the moon in a number of underground colonies in the year 2075:

From the overcrowded Earth, political prisoners and criminals are sent to the moon to do forced labor. After their sentence ends, they are free to go wherever they want. However, because their bodies are no longer able to withstand Earth’s gravity, they are forced to remain on the moon. And then the rebellion breaks out.

Finally, I also see the program booklet for the opera ‘Turandot’ by Giacomo Puccini, a production of the National Opera last season. ‘In the Imperial Palace in Beijing, Princess Turandot issued a decree. The man who wants to marry her must solve three riddles. If he fails, he will be beheaded.” And then the opera unfolds.
