There used to be a warning in stores: “Just 10 boxies per buyer.” Then this will be like one boxie per customer. And then everything is a sale.
In those stores where eggs were always in stock, prices also tended to increase. Because the supply of eggs, a staple protein in many households, has been paralyzed lately due to the latest outbreak of bird flu.
Since the disease was noticed in our poultry farm in April this year, approximately 7.5 million fowl specifically grown for their meat and eggs have had to be culled. This is almost a third of South Africa’s total fowl stock, says Izaak Breitenbach, CEO of the South African Poultry Association.
