KAAG EN BRAASSEM – A million-dollar deficit threatens the municipality of Kaag en Braassem in the budget for the coming years. To counter this, various costs are being increased. For example, households will pay significantly more housing costs and tourists will have to pay taxes for an overnight stay.

This can be read in the budget for next year, which is published on the municipality’s website. The exact amount of housing costs will differ per household. In their calculation, the municipality assumes that the owner of a home has a WOZ value of €400,000. In that case you would pay more than 55 euros more. The municipality writes that in that case the amount will go from 919 euros to 975 euros. An increase of about six percent.

The municipality will also increase the waste levy from 282 to 304 euros. In addition, there are costs per bag or container offered. There will also be increases in property taxes, fees and sewerage charges.

The tourist tax will be new. An exact amount has not yet been mentioned in the budget. The alderman will soon make a proposal to the municipal council. But that amount will probably be around two euros per person.

Deficit of 4.6 million euros

The municipality of Kaag en Braassem is in danger of ending up in the red by 2024. In 2027, that loss could even increase to 4.6 million euros. This means that the municipality has to get to work. Another factor is that the central government wants to make significant cuts in the general benefit. Despite this fact, the municipality has chosen to proactively try to solve the problem.

In the event of any setbacks, Kaag en Braassem could still reach for the reserve pot to balance the budget. In order to remain financially healthy in the longer term, people are also looking at ways to make cuts.
