Residents, companies and schools can register tiles for the NK Tegelwippen until October 31, but the municipality of Leeuwarden has already improved its 2021 score. This year the counter stands at 43961 tiles. In 2021, 27,631 tiles from gardens were replaced with plants, shrubs, trees or grass.
“A great score that we owe to all residents, entrepreneurs, schools and municipal employees who have been busy greening their own outdoor spaces in recent months. Greening areas is desperately needed, because making the municipality heat and water resistant is something we can all contribute to and reap the benefits of. The NK Tegelwippen makes gardening fun and accessible in an accessible way. Anyone with a garden can participate. Whether you replace 5, 10 or 100 tiles with green, every tile counts. So please participate!” said Sustainability Alderman Evert Stellingwerf.
Steenbreek Leeuwarden hands out flower bulbs
Steenbreek Leeuwarden is organizing a giveaway on Wednesday, October 18, as a thank you for all your efforts for the NK Tegelwippen. While supplies last, everyone can visit Oldehoofsterkerkhof 1 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. for a handful of flower bulbs. In dry weather, Steenbreek is next to the Leeuwarden Visitor Center. The flower bulbs should be planted in October or November and will add color to the garden in the spring.
Register your last tiles before October 31
What many people don’t know is that autumn is still a great time to get started in the garden. The soil is still warm and plants have enough time to establish roots for the winter. Go to www.nk-tegelwippen.nl/meedoen and submit your removed tiles. All tiles that are registered on the NK Tegelwippen website before October 31 still count. You also have a chance to win great prizes.
Climate-proof by 2035
The municipality of Leeuwarden wants to be climate-proof by 2035. That is why the Municipality of Leeuwarden will invest in the realization of additional water storage and a green public space in the coming years. The NK Tegelwippen contributes to this because residents consciously green their own environment. Green gardens are more resistant to increasing periods of heat and drought and retain rainwater better than paving. In addition, a green environment makes living, working and recreating in our municipality extra pleasant. Because it looks beautiful, contributes to a healthy climate, is good for nature, combats heat stress and retains water.
