ALBLASSERDAM – A group of soldiers visited Alblasserdam on Monday afternoon, October 9, 2023. At the artwork De Cyclus aan de Kade, the people of the Army received an explanation about how the fighting took place in and around Alblasserdam during the Second World War and what role the Bridge over the North (The forgotten bridge) played in this. They were also challenged to make a plan on how Defense would work in 2023.
The visit to Alblasserdam will be made more often, because a lot can be learned from Damdorp’s history. The presence of the soldiers attracted attention from children and veterans, among others.
The explanation was given by someone on behalf of the Netherlands Institute for Military History. The NIMH is a specialized knowledge and research center in the field of Dutch military history. The institute’s task is to research and provide education on Dutch military history. This happens, among other things, at the Royal Military Academy. The institute also provides military-historical advice to the defense organization and produces publications in the military-historical field. The institute also has an important task in recording events during the current operations of the Dutch armed forces. Furthermore, the NIMH manages a unique military-historical collection and makes it accessible to a wide audience.
