A minor will be tried as an adult for a fatal stabbing in Berchem.

One minor from Aalst who was arrested after a stabbing in Berchem, in which a sixteen-year-old boy from Borgerhout died, has been handed over by the juvenile judge in Dendermonde. His lawyer will appeal the ruling. The other minor suspect will not be tried as an adult, but the public prosecutor’s office can still appeal the decision.

On December 21 last year, witnesses saw the victim being chased in Wapenstilstandlaan around 8 a.m. He was stabbed in the back while fleeing and fell to the ground. His attackers stabbed him several more times before running away. The victim was taken to the UZA in critical condition, but succumbed to his injuries.

Extreme violence

Two sixteen-year-old boys from Aalst and one eighteen-year-old from Antwerp were arrested. The juvenile judge placed the minors in a closed institution and the adult was arrested by the investigating judge. The stabbing is said to be an act of revenge among ‘drill rappers’, a phenomenon in which young people show off extreme violence in videos.

The decision of the juvenile judge in Dendermonde is provisionally enforceable, meaning that the minor will immediately be brought before the investigating judge in Antwerp, who will decide whether he will remain arrested. (blg)
