The Belgian Rock Werchter presents a huge line-up every year. For four days you will see the biggest headliners from the rock, pop and indie worlds. It is therefore not surprising that there is already a lot of speculation about the next edition. This is an overview of the biggest rumors.
Foo Fighters
Thanks to a very generous statement from festival director Herman Schueremans, it seems clear as day that Foo Fighters will headline Rock Werchter 2024. With the rock-solid release But Here We Are under the arm, the rockers have risen after the tragedy of the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins and it is time for action again. A tour is planned in the United Kingdom in June, but the gentlemen are still available during the Werchter weekend. Thanks to a loose-lipped Schueremans and the puzzle pieces of the current tour dates, we are already writing in pencil: Foo Fighters is coming to Rock Werchter 2024.
Ed Sheeran
With his current record, it seemed almost impossible to ever see Ed Sheeran at a festival again. Yet the immensely popular singer has now been confirmed for festivals in Germany and Norway. Both close to Rock Werchter. And so the road to the festival is completely open. Sheeran has only been there once before, when as a 21-year-old he took to the stage of The Barn armed with his guitar at the beginning of Sunday evening. With a now more extensive stock of hits, a strong production and more stage experience, we would like to see the sympathetic hit machine again as one of the headliners of Rock Werchter 2024.
Sam Smith
Sam Smith is one of the first names of the Norwegian Stavernfestivalen, which takes place almost in the same weekend as Rock Werchter. At NOS Alive 2023, the pop star made a huge impression with an extravagant show full of flamboyant outfits. The superstar has made significant growth as an artist since their last visit to the festival in 2014. With almost 57 million monthly listeners on Spotify, their latest achievement Gloriaand also an inspiring story to stand for and tell, Rock Werchter 2024 would put a great new headliner on the bill with the arrival of Sam Smith.
Coldplay
By booking Coldplay they could pull off a world-class stunt in Belgium. Between the stadium run in Lyon (22, 23 and 25 June) and the subsequent series in Rome (12-13 and 15-16 July), a considerable Werchter-shaped gap has arisen in the British tour schedule. Has the organization of Rock Werchter 2024 managed to lure Chris Martin and his men to an (exclusive) festival show after 13 years? If there is one festival that manages to achieve this, it is Werchter.
Dua Lipa
With a new album on the way and many big plans, Dua Lipa is a name to keep an eye on for the upcoming festival summer. The pop star gave an unforgettable show at Sziget 2022 between established rock names such as Arctic Monkeys and Kings of Leon. As far as we are concerned, it is not inconceivable that the 27-year-old singer will provide some poppy balance at Rock Werchter 2024 in a mainly rock-dominated line-up. Let’s be honest: ‘Dont Start Now’ and ‘Dance the Night’ even get the most seasoned Werchtergoer on the move, right?
The National
A slightly more ‘alternative’ sound perhaps? The National is not sitting still, the group has released no fewer than two albums this year. Published in June First Two Pages of Frankenstein and in September it suddenly happened Laugh Track. So The National has plenty of reason to tour. Add to this that Belgium was not included in the last European tour, with which the group made quite an impression in the Ziggo Dome. With indie anthems such as ‘Bloodbuzz Ohio’, ‘Tropic Morning News’ and excellent collaborations with Phoebe Bridgers and Taylor Swift, among others, The National has long been ready for a great headline spot at Rock Werchter 2024.
Lorde
With Lorde we once again feature an artist who has only performed at Rock Werchter once: in 2017, the New Zealander played in The Barn. The same applies to the 26-year-old singer: she has long left the smaller stages behind her and is ready for a higher, if not, the highest spot on the largest stage of the festival field. At Sziget she gave a magical show in which she surprised the audience with a danceable sound alternating with her characteristic dreamy sounds. She has already revealed that she is working on new music, so a tour will undoubtedly follow. With a bit of luck, this tour will be planned in such a way that the singer will automatically walk onto the Main of Rock Werchter 2024.
TheCure
Where is that long-awaited new album from The Cure? At the time of writing there is still no news about this Songs of a Lost World, but it’s really coming, if we can believe frontman Robert Smith. Either way, The Cure is always a welcome guest on the festival stages and the band’s history with Werchter goes way back to the Torhout Werchter days, so they are certainly welcome. The group currently has eight shows in South America. After a European indoor tour in 2022 and the work ethic of the British, it does not seem inconceivable to us that The Cure will tour the festivals in 2024. A great moment for a warm reunion at Rock Werchter 2024.
Depeche Mode
After Depeche Mode’s sold-out shows in the Ziggo Dome, we knew for sure: how much we missed them at the 2023 festivals. Apart from an exclusive performance at Primavera Sound, the British were not visible on any festival posters. Will that change in 2024? The Memento Moritour turns out to be a long journey, because the agenda of these icons is filled with indoor shows in the United States until April 2024 and a second run in Europe. Will the group then take the time to recharge their batteries and go to the festivals? Rock Werchter 2024 seems like the perfect opportunity to completely make up for the loss of last summer.
